Raksha is not a dubbing of Ram Gopal Varma’s Hindi film Phoonk but is certainly based on it. The film has been remade completely in Telugu and has been suitably modified to cater to the tastes of the Telugu audiences. The film is directed by Akella Vamsi Krishna, a protégé of RGV. The film looks at the practice of sorcery and an atheist’s fight against such acts popularly known as ‘chetabadi’.

Story:

Rajeev (Jagapathi Babu) is an atheist. He has a happy family consisting of his mother Radha Kumari, wife Kalyani, son Rahul (Atul) and a daughter Raksha (Neha). While Rajeev is a non-believer, his wife and mother are god fearing and believe in things like sorcery.

Rajeev gives employment to his friend Venu (Rajiv Kankala) and his wife Madhu (Sathya Krishna) in his company. But they cheat him and Rajeev sacks them. This naturally irks Venu and his wife. They want to take revenge and approach a sorcerer Veerendra Chauhan. He starts his black magic and as a result, Raksha is affected. She behaves strangely and Rajeev thinks this to be some kind of ailment. But his wife and mother say that it is black magic. Even the doctors’ are unable to find the exact cause of Raksha’s illness.

Rajeev goes to meet a Baba (Pradeep Rawat) on the insistence of his friend Subba Raju. The Baba tells Rajeev that his daughter is suffering due to the black magic being performed at the behest of Venu and Madhu. Rajeev then sets out to catch the sorcerer. He manages to stop the sorcerer from causing further harm to his daughter and saves her life.

Rajeev ends up in believing in god and things like black magic. His wife Kalyani thinks that her daughter’s life has been saved by a doctor (Jayasudha). Venu and Madhu are killed when they are made to jump from a building by Rajeev.

Performance:

The film is a Jagapathi Babu show all the way. Jagapathi Babu comes up with another winning and convincing performance. No other actor could have done justice to the role of Rajeev. Kalyani gives him adequate support with her neat portrayal. Pradeep Rawat as the Baba is good. Melkote raises some laughs. Jeeva, Jaya Sudha, Rajiv Kanakala and other are okay in their roles. Music by Amar Mohile is effective and sets the mood for the horror film. Raksha reminds us of the film Tulasi. The screenplay is fairly good and manages to hold interest.
In the end, the film is strictly not a horror film as was widely portrayed in the media.

The film can be watched once, if only for the superb portrayal of Jagapathi Babu.
