Story

Kotha Bangaru Lokam is a typical love story set against a college backdrop. Director Sreekanth Addala however manages to make it a bit interesting with a surprising twist in the end.

Balu (Varun Sandesh) is the only son of doting parents, Jaya Sudha and Prakash Raj. Like all middle class parents, they rest all their hopes on their son to make it big in life. Prakash Raj is a wholesale Banana merchant and he believes in disciplining his son through love and affection rather than using the stick.

Swapna (Swetha Prasad) is the only daughter of Ahuthi Prasad, a well to do businessman from Gajuwaka. He sends his daughter to the same college where the hero Balu is also studying. While the parents are under the impression that their children are studying hard for Inter and Eamcet, Balu and Swapna fall in love and neglect their studies.

One day Balu and Swapna’s photo is in the papers for romancing in public. Swapna’s father Ahuthi Prasad takes Swapna back home. Hero Balu does not know what to do as he is also sent away from the college.

Balu goes home and tells his parents that he has come home to sturdy for a month as he cannot concentrate on his studies at the hostel. But he is deeply disturbed and Prakash Raj learns that he is in love. He however does not take Balu to task but tries to change him with his love and affection.

Balu goes to Swapna’s home and tells her father that he is in love with his daughter. But Ahuthi Prasad has different plans. He sends Balu away telling him that he will talk to his parents. But he fixes Swapna’s marriage with another guy.

Swapna and Balu decide to elope and they plan to meet at the railway station. While Swapna waits for Balu, Balu does not turn up at the railway station.

The scene then shifts to four years later and Balu is shown at the college convocation. He is a top ranker at the college n engineering.

Where is Swapna. What happens to the love of Balu and Swapna. How does the film end – on a happy note or a sad note? Answers to all this can be found on the silver screen.

Performance:

Varun Sandesh of Happy Days fame has given a matured performance. He fits the role of a Inter first year student to the tee. His performance is realistic as well as convincing. Swetha Prasad as the heroine is okay. This is her first film but she does not shoe any inhibitions in facing the camera. In some scenes she looks like Ankitha.

Prakash Raj comes up with another brilliant performance as the doting father of the hero. His understated yet impressive acting makes him the real hero of the film. Jayasudha as his dutiful wife and a doting mother of the hero gives another good performance. Ahuthi Prasad with a typical Godavari slang is quite convincing.

Brahmanandam as the principal of the college manages to raise some laughs. The rest of the star cast is adequate in their roles.

Mickey J Meyers music is already a hit. The song ‘Kalashaalalo… oohu… oohu..’ and the song ‘Nijangaa… Neenega…’ are good.

The dialogue “Ekkada” with a heavy accent, uttered by the heroine many times in the film raises some laugher. Ahuthi Prasad has several one liners – “ Inti deepam kadha ani muddu pettukunte, meesam kaluthundi”. The dialogue by the friends of the hero – ‘Evadu debba kodithe dimma thirig mind block ayyi black, white, red, green, yellow avuthundo, vaade andamaina adapillala tandri” also raises laughter in the cinema hall.

The film runs like a typical teenage love story for a major part. But for the suspense elements and twist in the climax, the Kotha Bangaru Lokam would have ended up as another routine love story. The director must be commended for coming up with a predictable but different ending for the film.
