Kotha Bangaru Lokam

STARRING : Varun Sandesh, Swetha Prasad, Prakash Raj, Jayasudha, Brahmanandam and others
MUSIC : Mickey J Meyer
DIRECTOR : Sreekanth Addala
RELEASE DATE : October 9th, 2008

Good

Story

Kotha Bangaru Lokam is a typical love story set against a college backdrop. Director Sreekanth Addala however manages to make it a bit interesting with a surprising twist in the end.

Balu (Varun Sandesh) is the only son of doting parents, Jaya Sudha and Prakash Raj. Like all middle class parents, they rest all their hopes on their son to make it big in life. Prakash Raj is a wholesale Banana merchant and he believes in disciplining his son through love and affection rather than using the stick.

Swapna (Swetha Prasad) is the only daughter of Ahuthi Prasad, a well to do businessman from Gajuwaka. He sends his daughter to the same college where the hero Balu is also studying. While the parents are under the impression that their children are studying hard for Inter and Eamcet, Balu and Swapna fall in love and neglect their studies.

One day Balu and Swapna’s photo is in the papers for romancing in public. Swapna’s father Ahuthi Prasad takes Swapna back home. Hero Balu does not know what to do as he is also sent away from the college.

Balu goes home and tells his parents that he has come home to sturdy for a month as he cannot concentrate on his studies at the hostel. But he is deeply disturbed and Prakash Raj learns that he is in love. He however does not take Balu to task but tries to change him with his love and affection.

Balu goes to Swapna’s home and tells her father that he is in love with his daughter. But Ahuthi Prasad has different plans. He sends Balu away telling him that he will talk to his parents. But he fixes Swapna’s marriage with another guy.

Swapna and Balu decide to elope and they plan to meet at the railway station. While Swapna waits for Balu, Balu does not turn up at the railway station.

The scene then shifts to four years later and Balu is shown at the college convocation. He is a top ranker at the college n engineering.

Where is Swapna. What happens to the love of Balu and Swapna. How does the film end – on a happy note or a sad note? Answers to all this can be found on the silver screen.

Performance:

Varun Sandesh of Happy Days fame has given a matured performance. He fits the role of a Inter first year student to the tee. His performance is realistic as well as convincing. Swetha Prasad as the heroine is okay. This is her first film but she does not shoe any inhibitions in facing the camera. In some scenes she looks like Ankitha.

Prakash Raj comes up with another brilliant performance as the doting father of the hero. His understated yet impressive acting makes him the real hero of the film. Jayasudha as his dutiful wife and a doting mother of the hero gives another good performance. Ahuthi Prasad with a typical Godavari slang is quite convincing.

Brahmanandam as the principal of the college manages to raise some laughs. The rest of the star cast is adequate in their roles.

Mickey J Meyers music is already a hit. The song ‘Kalashaalalo… oohu… oohu..’ and the song ‘Nijangaa… Neenega…’ are good.

The dialogue “Ekkada” with a heavy accent, uttered by the heroine many times in the film raises some laugher. Ahuthi Prasad has several one liners – “ Inti deepam kadha ani muddu pettukunte, meesam kaluthundi”. The dialogue by the friends of the hero – ‘Evadu debba kodithe dimma thirig mind block ayyi black, white, red, green, yellow avuthundo, vaade andamaina adapillala tandri” also raises laughter in the cinema hall.

The film runs like a typical teenage love story for a major part. But for the suspense elements and twist in the climax, the Kotha Bangaru Lokam would have ended up as another routine love story. The director must be commended for coming up with a predictable but different ending for the film.

CHINTHAKAYALA RAVI MOVIE REVIEW

STARRING : Venkatesh, Anushka, Mamatha Mohandas, Lakshmi, Brahmanandam and others
MUSIC : Vishal Shekar
DIRECTOR : Yogesh
RELEASE DATE : October 2nd, 2008

Average
Story
A lot of hype was created around Venkatesh’s film, after his hit AMAV. The film is high on entertainment, a typical Venky fare but scores low on content.

Chintkayala Ravi is a 30 plus something. He makes his parents believe that he is a software engineer but he is actually working as a bartender in the US. He does not pursue his education with the money sent by his parents but instead he spends it on the treatment of his friend. Ravi’s parents’ Lakshmi and Chandramohan boast to everyone in their village that their son is a big software engineer in the US.

Lakshmi manages to find a match for her son. She is Lavanya (Mamatha Mohandas). Lavanya has a friend in the US – Sunitha (Anushka). She asks her friend to get complete details bout Chintkayala Ravi. Suntiha meets Ravi in not so pleasant encounter. She finds out the truth that Ravi is not a software engineer but actually a bartender.

The rest of the film is how Ravi sets about controlling the damage. The story runs mainly between Ravi, Lavanya and Sunitha with Lakshmi chipping in with mother sentiment.

Performance:

Venkatesh once again plays hisrole as that of anage barred bachelor with ease. He also looks stylish and young. His comedy timing is good as usual. However there are some comedy scenes that are a bit vulgar.

Anushka plays out her role of a glamour doll to perfection. Mamatha Mohandas gets a meaty role in this film and she does a neat job.

Lakshmi gives a neat and restrained performance. Sunil’s comedy is routine and Ali’s Nachmi character is brought over from Chirutha and is vulgar to put it mildly. The comedy of Brahmanandam is also average.

The presence of Jr. NTR in a song ‘Shava shava…’ is received with wide applause. The music is okay. The film runs quite smoothly in the first half but drags on and on in the second half. The film has some good production values but the film is a predictable stuff in terms of story and screenplay.

The film is a mix of several Hindi films and there is not much originality in the story or the presentation. The average cinegoer can easily predict the ending as to who Ravi will marry in the end - Sunitha or Lavanya.

The film is an average entertainer.

Rainbow movie review

STARRING : Rahul, Sonal chouhan, Sindu Menon, Sunil and others

MUSIC : Nihal
DIRECTOR : VN Adithya
RELEASE DATE : October 2nd, 2008

Below Average

The film Rainbow is quite different from the run of the mill love and youth stories and the director and producer of the film, VN Adithya must be appreciated for daring to make something different. But the film does not manage to create a great impression partly due to the below par performances by the lead actors.

Story:

Shyam (Rahul) is an orphan. He lives in a rented house. The house belongs to Gollpaudi Maruthi Rao. Paruchuri is his son-in-law. Parachuri has a daughter Kamala (Sindhu Menon). Kamala is good looking girl but unfortunately she is both deaf and dumb. She is working as an artist with a paints company.

Swapna (Sonal Chouhan) is the daughter of a stage artist. He had dream of becoming a film actor but could not succeed. So Swapna now wants to fulfill her dad’s wish by becoming a big film actor.

Swapna meets Shyam and he in turn decides to help Swapna fulfill her dream. Shyam helps Swapna to get her portfolio prepared by his friend Sunil, who is a photographer. He also enrolls Swapna in an acting school run by Shiva Reddy. Shyam meets with a major accident and the injury on his head makes him colour blind.

While the colour in the life of Shyam has gone out, Swapna manages to make a big impression in Tollywood and she becomes a successful heroine. The rest of the story is what happens to Shyam’s love for Swapna and what happens to Swapna’s dream of making it big as an actress.

Performance:

Rahul gives a good account but he is still struggling with his mannerism and expressions. There is still a lot of scope for improvement. Debutante Sonal Chouhan is good looking and she does a good job in hr maiden appearance. Sindhu Menon gives a convincing performance as a deaf and dump girl. Shiva Reddy showcases his mimicry and dancing skills effectively.

Gollapudi, Parachuri, Prakash Raj and others are okay. The comedy is just average despite the film boasting of a long list of comedians.

Director SS Rajamouli plays a director in the film. His role is only for a few minutes. Kodi Ramakrishna and Srinu Vytla also flash on the screen briefly. Nihal’s music is okay and VN Adithya manages to create a good impression with his first film as a producer.

The title Rainbow is quite apt for the film. The fate of the film depends a lot on word of mouth publicity. The absence of commercial elements is likely to affect the box office prospects considerably.
